Wype's goal is to eliminate single use wet wipes by providing an alternative solution. Wet wipes are commonly flushed down the toilet and contribute to 93% of sewer blockages in the UK.
The resulting design is a refillable gel applicator, that enables users to easily apply the gel to standard toilet paper and use it as if it was a wet wipe. The applicator has a patent pending pump that evenly distributes the gel out of an array of 5 holes, allowing the user to easily spread the gel across the paper.
Research insights on this project highlighted an opportunity for innovation. Existing gels and sprays on the market that aim to achieve the same thing, typically only apply to a single area, causing the paper to get too wet and rip. The design of Wype applicator provides a solution to this problem by spreading the gel out over a larger surface area and leading to an overall improved user experience.
The applicator refills are packaged in infinitely recycled aluminium bottles which easily screw to the applicator head.
The design of the Wype applicator went through a second iteration after it's launch, as consumer feedback indicated that a large part of the user population that were finding the product really useful, had a specific need for the product to be more accessible. Minor tweaks to the design lead to large improvements in accessibility for user groups that were most in need.
I lead the Mechanical Design, Design for Manufacture and Engineering of the original Wype applicator, as well as leading the improvements for the second iteration of the product.
